August 2016 was host to the first ever nationwide awareness campaign promoting Access Radio in New Zealand. Here's a look back at what Access Manawatu's events for the inaugural celebration! To watch any of the recorded events, check out our Periscope channel here.
The Experiment! (Back to Top)
Held at the Palmerston North City Library, "The Experiment" was an opportunity for Access Manawatu to push it's technological capabilities in regards to Live OB's (Outside Broadcasts) - including live-streaming audio back to our station, as well as providing a live-video feed for the community to watch at home.
A HUGE Thank You to the Lockdown06 crew for hosting a special edition of their programme!
Radio with a Live Audience! (Back to Top)
The PN Central Library was also host to our series of Live Radio recording sessions! These included:
Come & Learn Sessions! (Back to Top)
Access Manawatu hosted a series of two hour workshops every Saturday afternoon in August. These were open to the public, but were largely attended by current programme makers looking to further their skills in the studio, and on social media for the betterment of their content!
Our first workshop, The Studio Environment, was hosted by our Programme Coordinator, Hugh Dingwall, who took us through everything from the do's and do not's of mic technique in the studio (with examples), to optional sound effects and ideas for programme makers.
ArrowFM's station manager, Michael Wilson (above right, pictured with Karl Pearce) was host to our second workshop which provided an entertaining and insightful look at Creating Dynamic and Engaging Radio and the personalities behind the microphones ("and then some!"). Michael also got the following week's workshop kick-started by working on some interviewing techniques!
On the 20th of August our Station Manager, Fraser Greig, conducted an “Interview Technique” session looking at the basic principles of Interviewing people in programmes. We covered the purpose of an interview, some general “do’s” and “don’t’s” with regard to questioning, the importance of listening and the legal considerations.
Phil Grey, station manager of FreeFM, and host of Retrospect - '60's Garage Punk Show, brought his presentation, "The Podcast Revolution", to Access Manawatu as our final workshop for The Big Listen! Phil's workshop opened new doors to some of our programme makers in regards to their presence on social media, and how to engage with their audiences!
These were very popular sessions and we’ve had requests to do it again - Watch This Space!
Radio to You! (Back to Top)
For some of our Palmerston North neighbours, it's not always easy to make it into Access Manawatu, so, we decided to take Access Manawatu to them! We made two stops as part of The Big Listen to Feilding, and Ashhurst to catch up with some of the locals about what's been happening in the greater Manawatu community!
Tuesdays 9th: Feilding Library
Tuesday 16th: Ashhurst Library
Election Coverage! (Back to Top)
Tuesday 23rd and 30th:
Access Manawatu teamed up with the Community Services Council at Hancock House to speak with candidates about their campaigns ahead of the local body elections in October 2016. Each candidate was given 6 minutes - the first 2minutes was uninterrupted, and then the remain time included a brief interview with Fraser Greig.
Access Manawatu Open Day! (Back to Top)
Our final event for The Big Listen was an Open Day at the station attended by programme makers, station sponsors, and a swarm of studying musicians from UCoL! It was a great opportunity to catch up, discuss ideas, and to see what Access Radio is about!
Also during August, we launched our newly redeveloped website! We are truly thrilled with how it's turned out, and a HUGE thanks to the team at Firecrest Systems for their continued support of Access Manawatu, and Access Radio in New Zealand!
